Pediatric Orthopedic and Sports Physical Therapy

Pediatric orthopedic and sports physical therapy deals with a wide variety of problems that may affect a child’s development from infancy through the teen years. At Physicians Physical Therapy Service, our goal is to ensure each child’s physical capabilities in everyday activities is the best it can be.

Treating children and adolescents includes examining, evaluating and assessing the areas the child may have difficulty functioning. Physicians Physical Therapy Service considers the unique stage in development, understanding children and adults are not just small adults.  We then incorporate active therapies focused on creating muscular balance, coordination, force absorption, flexibility, speed, balance and proprioception.

Types of commonly seen injuries in children:           

  • Ankle strain/sprain,
  • Sever’s Disease – Achilles Tendon
  • Patella-femoral Syndrome
  • Jumper’s Knee – patellar tendon pain
  • Little league shoulder / elbow pain
  • Fractures
  • ACL reconstruction
  • Arthroscopic repairs
  • Scoliosis / Back Pain
  • Osgood-Schlatter’s Disease
  • Decreased strength or endurance
  • Poor posture
  • Torticollis
  • Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis

Indicators for referral to Physical Therapy:

  • Increased muscle tightness / decreased flexibility
  • Muscle weakness
  • Delay in obtaining motor skills / milestones
  • Poor balance and/or coordination
  • Difficulty participating in age appropriate activities and sports
  • Postural abnormalities
  • Pain

Physicians Physical Therapy Service Pediatric and Sport Physical Therapy:

  • Provides interventions to improve mobility, strength, flexibility, balance and coordination
  • Provide hands-on techniques to improve joint alignment with movement
  • Use handling techniques to facilitate age appropriate motor skills
  • May provide orthotic assessment / training, kinesiotaping  to facilitate active movement or provide stability
  • Work with the family and provides a home program and activities to assure carry over
